Tony Hanks received his Bachelor of Optometry in Australia at the University of NSW, and a Doctor of Optometry in the United States at the New England College of Optometry, Boston. In 1998 he was named an Inaugural Fellow of the Contact Lens Society of Australia.

He has established and conducted successful optometry practices, and also worked on the research and development staff of Bausch & Lomb in Rochester and CIBA Vision in both Atlanta and Zurich. His fields of interest are specialty soft contact lenses, children’s vision and professional practice development.

In 1980 Tony Hanks helped to establish “The Eye Talk Reference Guide” and in 1985 he founded a group of cooperating optometrists now called the Australian Optometric Panel. In 2000 he further developed this idea of professional cooperation with the establishment of the Eyecare Plus group of practices.

In 2006 the Optometrists Association Australia recognised his outstanding contributions to the profession by awarding Tony Hanks the annual “Josef Lederer Award for Excellence in Optometry”.

In 2010 he was recognized in the Order Of Australia awards announced in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Appointments to the Order of Australia confer the highest recognition for outstanding achievement and service.

Tony Hanks was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for “significant commitment, dedication and meritorious service deemed worthy of particular recognition” by the Governor General of Australia for service to optometry and the community, as well as for his involvement in improving international eyecare and education.

In 2013 the Australian College of Optometry (ACO) awarded him an Honorary Life Membership for “distinguished and honourable service to the profession of optometry in Australia and around the world”.

He has conducted optometry practices based in Port Macquarie, and worked as an independent clinical and professional consultant. He is also an experienced lecturer, having spoken and published on a variety of vision-related topics in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Tony Hanks has had many articles and papers published internationally, as well as being a co-editor for some clinical optometry reference publications. His book for support staff – “The Optometry Team” – is now in its’ fourth edition and his book for optometrists – “What Patients Want”  – is in its’ first edition.

Tony Hanks has now retired from practice as an optometrist, having sold his optometry practices in 2016 to George & Matilda Eyecare; sold his share of Eye Talk in 2014 to the Optical Distributors & Manufacturers Association (ODMA); become an Emeritus Former Member of the Australian Optometric Panel (AOP) in 2016; and resigned in 2016 as a member and director of Eyecare Plus.

Dr Hanks has served on the Global Development Board for the charity Optometry Giving Sight and was previously the Foundation Chairman of the Global Advisory Board.
